Fabian Schiller, sponsored driver of the German Post Speed Academy, is going to drive a race on a city track for the first in his still young racing career this weekend. The third racing weekend of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship is going to take place from May 15th-17th on the venerable and extremely challenging track at the Pyrenees location Pau.

The Formula 3 GP Pau is definitely one of the absolute highlights on the racing calendar of the Formula 3 European Championship. The track is regarded as the oldest city track in the world; its track layout has not been changed since 1933. Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark and Jochen Rindt have won races here before. The Formula 3 serves as the main race of the event in Pau, whereby the drivers can be sure to have the audience’s special attention and can already look forward to an exceptional atmosphere

Fabian Schiller: “Even though I’ve obviously already heard a lot about the race in Pau, I’m already very excited to travel there and to find out what is going to wait for me there. I’ve watched videos of the Formula 3 from the past years and can hardly wait to drive on the track myself. Naturally the track is very narrow due to it being a city track and there are only a few possibilities for overtaking. Qualifying is therefore going to be of special importance. Due to the hardly existing run-off areas a special intuition is going to be necessary. I believe that this kind of race is going to be right for me though.”

Race format & timetable

Basically, the racing weekend in Pau follows the regular timetable and is going to start Friday morning with the free trainings. On Friday afternoon the two rounds of qualifying of the weekend are going to follow. The result of the first qualifying is going to set the starting positions for the first race while after the second qualifying, the fastest as well as second-fastest times of the drivers are going to be assessed in order to set the starting positions for the second and third races.

The peculiarity in Pau is that the free trainings as well as qualifying are going to be split into two groups. This approach was deliberately chosen by the series organizers, to reduce the number of 35 drivers on the streets of the city track during these important trainings units. This serves the drivers’ security and additionally facilitates a fair qualifying without hindering each other.

On Saturday the first two of the three races are going to take place. There is going to be one race in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the meantime the drivers can attend team meetings with their engineers as well as media events and autograph sessions. The final race of the weekend is then going to take place on late Sunday morning. The racing distance of each race is about 100km and lasts a maximum of 35 minutes. Championship points are going to be administered the same way as in the Formula 1:

P1 = 25, P2 = 18, P3 = 15, P3 = 12, P4 = 10, P5 = 8, P6 = 6, P7 = 4, P8 = 2, P10 = 1.

The young German driver Fabian Schiller (17) from the Cologne/Troisdorf area is driving his first season at the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2015. This is said to be THE stepping stone for ambitious drivers into professional racing. Max Verstappen and Tom Blomqvist proved this by achieving the direct rise from Formula 3 to Formula 1 and the DTM over the past winter. Even though Fabian Schiller is obviously trying to follow in their footsteps, he is pursuing a different dream– with his participation in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship he is following his long-term goal, an LMP1 cockpit at the long distance World Championship (WEC)as well as the connected start at the 24h race in Le Mans. In addition to the drivers training, Fabian is a member of the German Post Speed Academy and proud to be supported by this renowned program for the second year in a row.
